Matthew 10:27-28

Extraordinary Things

May 06, 2025 by Addison Crissone
A few weeks ago, I sat in a hotel room reading my Bible as I sat cross-legged on the bed.
I happened to be reading through the gospel of Luke at the time, in the fifth chapter.
And as I was reading, I stumbled upon this verse-

And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying,
"We have seen extraordinary things today."
-Luke 5:26

This verse got me thinking. How many days pass without us stepping back and saying aloud, "I have seen something extraordinary today?"
This verse is describing the response of the people in the aftermath of one of Jesus's most beloved miracles- the healing of the lame man who was brought before Jesus by his faithful friends.
These people not only saw a miracle with their own eyes, but they also heard the words spoken by the Messiah himself- and they chose to believe in him, exclaiming that this event was something out of the ordinary, something now had never expected to witness in their simple, mundane lives.
And they saw that it was something extraordinary.

I wonder how many things in life we notice and claim are simply a coincidence or something mundane that is the hand of God working in our world, in our everyday lives that often pass without joy or celebration.
I wonder how many times God has tried to get our attention through the things we face in life or through the answered prayers that we just keep sweeping under the rug, and never bring attention to them. We never shed light on these little miracles and extraordinary things.
But why do we do this?
Why are we constantly blinded by this world and unable to view the miraculous God-winks that are all around us every day as we live and breathe on this earth? Why are we always moving so fast into the future that we never stop to appreciate the goodness of God in that He has carried us through another day, another trial, and another workday?
Well, I suppose it's because the devil doesn't want us to see these extraordinary things in our very ordinary lives.
He works very hard to keep us numb to God's miracles and blind to his mercy.
So what do we do?
Well, we begin looking. We ask God to open our eyes to His extraordinary things, so that we may see and appreciate them rather than simply writing them off as coincidences.
Believe me, extraordinary things are all around us- it is only if we choose to look for them.
